Curriculum Vitae

TONY GOSKIE | Senior Digital Artist | Chicago, IL

Since my youth, I have always wanted to be an artist. As video games became popular, I started creating early graphics on my Commodore 64. In 1989, I won a scholarship to the American Academy of Art, where I majored in Illustration, Fine Art, and Computer Arts, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. I have also received numerous awards for my fine art (oil painting), including:

  • The American Academy of Art Scholarship Award

  • Francis Hook Scholarship Fund

  • The Municipal Art League of Chicago for Outstanding Achievement in Fine Art

  • Creative Excellence Award (Sears Marketing)

I took a course in computer graphics, where I learned tools for creating digital images. During my final year at art school, I landed an internship creating educational animations for community colleges and workshops using Deluxe Paint, involving many hand-drawn animations and environments. After graduation, I started my career at Midway Games in 1991. This is where my 30+ year journey in video games began. NBA JAM was the first coin-op/arcade title I worked on, creating the court, audience, player heads, title screen, and cabinet art design.

After NBA JAM, I was asked to work on Mortal Kombat II Arcade, which was an immediate yes! My art style, which leans towards fantasy and surrealism, was perfectly suited for developing many environmental looks. It was like a dream job to create something on paper and see it come to life in the game. I contributed many years to what is now the Mortal Kombat franchise. Mortal Kombat 4 was our last arcade version before transitioning to console (PlayStation and Xbox). During this time, our team grew, and I took on more art direction tasks.

When Midway Games was acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment, Netherrealm Studios was born. In 2010, we released our first title, and my focus shifted more towards concept art. Over the years, my responsibilities varied based on the needs of the marketing department, including game renders, toy designs, and ad campaigns. I also worked with the studio's cinema department, handling tasks from animatics and storyboarding to designing environmental transitions and fatality ideas for our roster of characters. Additionally, I contributed to the mobile game division, assisting with concepts and environmental lighting.

I continue to create my own artwork for galleries and fundraisers. I also volunteer at my children's middle school, doing set designs and art for school plays.

Overall, I cannot see myself doing anything that is not art-related for a job.
